Protecting your home, and those in it, from mould

Ensuring a healthy living environment for you and your family is essential, and part of that involves addressing mould issues. Aside from being an eyesore, mould can pose serious health risks if ignored.

Mould exposure can cause respiratory problems, allergic reactions, and other health issues, particularly in vulnerable individuals such as children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions. Maintaining a mould-free environment is essential for the well-being of your family. Here are some steps to effectively manage mould in your home.

“Understanding the causes of mould growth is essential,” explains Jaime Pratt, Head of PM at VPM. “Mould thrives in damp, dark, and humid environments, making winter and spring prime seasons for its development. The combination of increased moisture, caused by heating in winter and warmer outside temperatures in spring, can create ideal conditions for mould to grow.”

  1. Identify any problem areas

Jaime suggests to start by inspecting your home for areas prone to moisture buildup, such as bathrooms and kitchens. “Look for visible signs of mould, such as discolouration or a musty odour. Identifying these areas is the first step in effectively managing mould.”

  1. Control moisture levels at home

To prevent mould growth, you should control indoor humidity levels. Use exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, improve ventilation, and consider using a dehumidifier in damp areas. Repair any leaks promptly, including plumbing or roof leaks, and reduce moisture buildup where possible.

  1. Create good ventilation

Jaime says that proper ventilation is vital to preventing mould. “You can ensure good air circulation throughout your home by opening windows and doors when the weather permits. This allows for fresh air, which reduces humidity levels, which in turn inhibits mould growth. Adequate ventilation can make a significant difference in mould prevention.”

  1. Keep your home clean

Regular cleaning and dusting are also essential to prevent mould spores from settling. Pay close attention to areas where moisture can accumulate, such as window sills, shower curtains, and bathroom tiles. Keeping your home as clean as possible helps remove potential sources of mould.

  1. Address leaks and water intrusion ASAP

It’s so important to inspect your home for any leaks or water intrusion. Repairing roof leaks, sealing cracks in the foundation, and maintaining proper drainage around your property can help prevent moisture buildup. Addressing these issues is crucial for mould prevention.

  1. Use mould-resistant materials

When chatting with landlords, Jaime recommends using mould-resistant materials when renovating or repairing their investment homes, especially in moisture-prone areas. “These materials can be a valuable long-term investment, as they are less susceptible to mould growth.”

  1. Conduct regular maintenance and inspections

be sure to schedule regular inspections to catch mould issues early. If you notice any signs of mould, address the problem promptly, as you’d be surprised at how quickly mould can spread if left unchecked. Jaime suggests speaking to your property manager to lock in regular inspections to help stay on top of mould prevention and any subsequent unnecessary expenses.

  1. Seek professional help

If you’re unsure how to handle mould or have a severe case and are unsure where to start, speak to your property manager. They will consult with a professional mould remediation expert. “These experts can assess the extent of the problem and provide safe and effective solutions, ensuring that mould is properly removed,” Jaime advises.

  1. Educate yourself

The more you can learn about mould prevention and management, the better. By simply understanding the basics, you can take proactive steps to protect your home and the health of its occupants. Awareness of the factors contributing to mould growth is essential for effective mould management.
